DELMONICO BOOKS/HAMMER MUSEUM

Witch Hunt

Edited with text by Connie Butler and Anne Ellegood. Foreword by Ann Philbin. Contributions by Vanessa Arizmendi, Ana Briz, Nika Chilewich, Jamillah James.

Witch Hunt

Sixteen international artists at the forefront of feminism

This book focuses on a selection of midcareer international artists whose oeuvres are informed by the legacies of feminist thought. Each artist adds to the feminist discourse, whether by reclaiming womens marginalized creative histories, using gender discrimination as a method of institutional critique or creating alternate research methodologies that confront patriarchal norms.
The book includes sculpture, painting, video, installation and performance art, and features lesser-known projects or entirely new commissions that recast sociopolitical realities throughout the world. In addition to extensive illustrations, the book includes essays by Anne Ellegood and Connie Butler, curators and art historians whose practices have also been dedicated to a discussion of womens rights.
Artists include: Leonor Antunes, Yael Bartana, Pauline Boudry / Renate Lorenz, Candice Breitz, Shu Lea Cheang, Minerva Cuevas, Vaginal Davis, Every Ocean Hughes, Bouchra Khalili, Laura Lima, Teresa Margolles, Otobong Nkanga, Okwui Okpokwasili, Lara Schnitger and Beverly Semmes.

PRAISE AND REVIEWS

Artblog

Andrea Kirsh

Employs colored borders to distinguish each artist, for whom there is a full page discussion along with extensive illustrations. Major texts by the two curators are placed in the middle and printed on different stock, narrower than the bulk of the volume, which gives the beautifully-printed volume an unusual physical presence.

'Witch Hunt' burns bright at Hammer Museum and ICA LA

Featured image is reproduced from Witch Hunt, the catalog to the exhibition opening at Hammer and ICA LA on October 10. Presenting the work of 16 international artists at the forefront of contemporary feminism, this 224-page hardcover includes work by Leonor Antunes, Yael Bartana, Pauline Boudry / Renate Lorenz, Candice Breitz, Shu Lea Cheang, Minerva Cuevas, Vaginal Davis, Every Ocean Hughes, Bouchra Khalili, Laura Lima, Teresa Margolles, Otobong Nkanga, Lara Schnitger, Beverly Semmes and Okwui Okpokwasili, whose 2016 Poor Peoples TV Room is featured here. Staged as a solo performance for Witch Hunt, Poor Peoples TV Room finds the artist performing inside a booth constructed of plywood and plastic sheeting, singing short, poetic fragments, Jamillah James writes. The shadows that Okpokwasili casts, along with footage projected behind her of Nigerian women congregating in various sites, suggest a critical mass of bodies, the legacy of their struggle contained within her frame, their power amplifying with every gesture and word. continue to blog
